Volkswagen has been building some of the world's most beloved vehicles for more than 70 years. While the VW Beetle may no longer be with us, many other great models continue to be built. However, these cars and SUVs are not without faults. The mechanics at G2 Automotive, a European auto repair shop in Cumming, GA, have put together a few must know problems in recent VW models. Whether you currently own one or are looking to buy, pay attention to these common Volkswagen problems.
Front Assist Technology Malfunction
The front assist system from VW is designed to detect objects in the road and automatically brake to avoid a collision. That's a neat feature, unless it starts detecting things that aren't there, which apparently happens. Starting with 2015 models and through 2020, issues with the front assist have caused vehicles to suddenly and unnecessarily slam on the brakes. A class action lawsuit regarding the issue has been filed, but in the meantime the feature can be turned off.
2018-2020 Atlas Fuel Injector Leaks
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently opened an investigation into reports of leaky fuel injectors on 2018-2020 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs with the 3.6L engine. This is a major issue, as a fuel leak could result in a fire. Having this problem repaired before it becomes a safety concern is an absolute must.
Volkswagen Oil Leaks
Pretty much any vehicle will start leaking oil at some point, and Volkswagens are no different. A few of the common areas to check for VW oil leaks include the valve cover gasket and timing chain cover gasket. These issues often start when an owner neglects to perform routine maintenance. This is an expensive lesson on why keeping up with regular oil changes is so important.
VW Passat Misfires
Misfires are a common issue with VW Passat models from between the years 2000 and 2010. The primary cause of the misfires has been determined to be a bad ignition coil, ignition wire or spark plugs. This issue most often begins occurring around 90,000 miles and is characterized by engine power loss, engine sputtering, a rough idle and difficult acceleration.
ABS Failure
The Anti-lock braking (ABS) system is designed to help a vehicle
maintain traction during stops, allowing drivers to have better control
of their vehicles. Many VW owners have reported ABS failures across a
wide variety of models and years, all ultimately pointing to a faulty
ABS module. The part itself isn't too expensive, but on most vehicles
it's a labor intensive repair.
